Bicycle Libraries: The Class of 2050

Libros Schmibros Bicycle Libraries by Andrew Vasquez

To expand our distribution on the Eastside beyond our brick-and-mortar lending library, Libros Schmibros plans to roll out a fleet of Bicycle Libraries and circulate books at farmer’s markets, grocery stores, loncheras, and other Metro-adjacent public spaces, all staffed by a specially trained cadre of volunteers. We aim to mentor a replenishable squadron of young-adult cyclists, riding hard for arts and literature, whose goal is to engage as many people as possible with the reading of literature.

Each of our Bicycle Libraries will carry a precious, carefully curated cargo of approximately 25 books reflecting our most popular Boyle Heights inventory. This selection will emphasize books about Los Angeles, children’s books, genre fiction, counterculture staples, classic syllabus mainstays, and Latin American literature — in both translation and the original language wherever possible.
