We are proud to announce the 50th anniversary screening of Tiempo de morir (Time to Die), the classic Mexican western written by Gabriel García Márquez and Carlos Fuentes and directed by the great Mexican filmmaker Arturo Ripstein, on Friday, August 5th at 7:30 PM at the Ford Theaters in Hollywood! In attendance will be Gabriel García Márquez’s son, the director Rodrigo García, and other special guests, who will introduce the film and discuss its importance in Mexican film history. The film will play in its original Spanish with English subtitles. It is our privilege to introduce this great film to modern audiences and foster a new tradition of bilingual outdoor film screenings in Los Angeles!
While there are many outdoor screenings this summer, none showcase Mexican films, which deserve a chance to be discovered and appreciated. Tiempo de morir is a great Mexican film, which combined the talents of two of Latin America’s greatest writers, the Colombian Gabriel García Márquez and the Mexican Carlos Fuentes. A powerful story about murder, revenge and fate set within the genre of the Western, it offers a nuanced examination of the motives that drive men to commit terrible acts. This narrative resonated so deeply with García Márquez that it served as the genesis to his celebrated novel Crónica de una muerte anunciada (Chronicle of a Death Foretold) published almost twenty years later.
This film screening is an exciting extension of our core mission: to give everyone the opportunity to share stories with their community and discover their transformative power. We give away free books at our lending library, organize a bilingual Children’s Reading Hour in Mariachi Plaza, and now screen rare but important Latin American films so people of all backgrounds can enjoy stories and perhaps become inspired to create their own.
If you agree with our mission and want to support us, please tell your friends about this event and come watch this great film with us at the Ford Theaters on Friday, August 5th at 7:30 PM. If you want to support us, but cannot attend, please consider making a donation.
